Lying at the center of Beijing, the magnificent, solemn and palatial Forbidden City is the largest wooden cluster in existence in the world today. In the history, it was a place where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties handled court business and resided.
Though repaired and rebuilt many times during some 500 years, but the basic form and layout of Forbidden City remains in the original state. Millions of tourists come to view it every year. Most of them are stunned by its magnificent architecture and give a high praise of our ancestors.
Not only famous for its majestic structure, the Forbidden City is also takes pride in its precious collections of more than 900, 000 cultural and art objects, many of which are state relics. As one of the most famous historical sites, the Forbidden City has a long history and it has witnessed the dynasties’ rise and fall.
Sacred Road
As the name suggests, Sacred Road means the road leading to heaven. In ancient times, people considered that heaven could help them by sacrifice. The Emperor, known as the Son of the Heaven, who came from Heaven to his country through the Sacred Way, also deservedly would return to Heaven through this road.
There are 12 human figures and 24 animals are lined with stone statues which are important decorations of the mausoleum. It is said that these animals is supposed to change guard at midnight. Built for Changling mausoleum, the Sacred Ways of other mausoleums branched off from this way, so it was also known as the General Sacred Way. By this chance, you can look around Ming Tombs which is the largest clusters of imperial cemeteries in China.
